Asymmetric styles

Asymmetric styles

One-shoulder tops, asymmetric hems, draped necklines and off-shoulder cuts — the detail that makes a simple piece look designed.

Why it works

An asymmetric line draws the eye diagonally across the body rather than straight across it, which is naturally more flattering and more interesting to look at. It is also the easiest way to make a plain top read as occasion wear without any embellishment.

The shapes

One shoulder — a single strap or sleeve. The most formal of the group and the obvious choice for an occasion.

Off shoulder — both shoulders exposed with the neckline sitting across the upper arm. Softer and more relaxed; works in a ruched jersey just as well as in a going-out fabric.

Asymmetric hem — an uneven hemline on a top, skirt or dress. Adds movement and makes a simple shape less static.

Draped and twisted — gathered fabric falling to one side. The most forgiving of all of them, because the drape skims rather than clings.

How to wear it

Let the asymmetry be the only event. Keep the bottom half simple — straight-leg denim, a plain trouser, a clean skirt — and skip a necklace, which competes with the neckline rather than adding to it. Earrings do the job better.

For off-shoulder styles, check the fit across the upper arm rather than the bust; that is where these either sit beautifully or slip all evening.

What we carry
