Why it works
Check reads as classic rather than trend-led, which means a check piece stays wearable long after the season it was bought in. It also adds interest to an outfit without adding colour, so it slots into a neutral wardrobe easily.
Scale matters
A small, tight check is subtle and behaves almost like a texture — easy to wear with almost anything. A large check is a statement and wants to be the only pattern in the outfit. Windowpane, with its fine widely spaced lines, sits between the two and is the most forgiving.
How to wear it
Keep everything else plain and let the check do the talking. A check blouse with dark denim, a check skirt with a fitted knit, or a check jacket thrown over a neutral base.
To mix check with another print, keep them in the same colour family and make sure the scales are clearly different — a small check with a large print, never two mediums.
