Olive green
Muted, earthy green with a grey-brown undertone — khaki, army, sage and deep olive. A neutral in everything but name.
Why it works
Olive behaves like a neutral while still being a colour, which makes it one of the most useful shades you can own. It goes with everything brown and cream already goes with, but adds depth that plain beige does not.
How to wear it
Olive and brown is the pairing worth learning — an olive top with chocolate trousers, or olive denim with a camel knit, looks considered without any effort. Olive also works with cream, black, butter yellow and, more unexpectedly, with burgundy.
Utility shapes are the natural home for it: cargo trousers, parachute pants, a funnel-neck jacket. But olive in a softer fabric — a viscose top, a draped dress — is what stops it looking purely functional.
Choosing your shade
Sage is the lightest and softest, easy next to the face. Army and khaki sit in the middle and are the most versatile. Deep olive is closest to a true neutral and works as a black alternative.
