Butter yellow
Soft, pale, slightly creamy yellow — the colour that has replaced white as the fresh neutral. Gentler than a bright yellow and far easier to wear than it sounds.
Why it works
Butter yellow has the lift of a colour with the flexibility of a neutral. It is soft enough to wear next to the face without overwhelming, and it works in every season — fresh in spring and summer, warm against brown and camel in autumn.
How to wear it
Treat it like cream. It pairs with almost anything, but it is at its best against brown and chocolate, with denim in any wash, and tonally with cream and off-white for a soft, expensive-looking outfit.
For something bolder, butter yellow against olive green or burgundy is an unexpected pairing that works far better than it should.
Who it suits
Almost everyone — the softness is what makes it forgiving where a bright yellow is not. If you are unsure, start with it away from your face: a skirt, trousers or a bag, rather than a top.
